Frequently Asked Questions
Is a referral from a doctor required to see a podiatrist?
A referral is not required, however you may wish to obtain a referral from your doctor if you have a complex medical condition(s).
If you have podiatry entitlements with Veteran's Affairs, you must obtain a doctor's referral if you wish to be bulk billed, and have Veteran's Affairs cover your fees.
Is Podiatry covered under Medicare?
No, Medicare is only for your doctor's consultations. If your podiatrist requires an X-ray, a Medicare refund can be claimed from the radiologist's fee.
Is Podiatry covered under my private health insurance?
Yes, most private insurance funds do cover podiatry under the extras table or ancillary services table. You need to check with your fund, to be sure of the extent of your cover.
What is the difference between Chiropody and Podiatry?
Podiatry is the new version of chiropody. Before the mid-1980's people that were trained to look after foot complaints were called chiropodists. Since then, the term chiropody has been dropped in favour of Podiatry (derived from the Greek words "podos" the foot and "-itra" the science of healing).
