Plantar Fasciitis, is the most common cause of heel pain.

It may occur at any age and presents in many different ways.

Some of the common symptoms include:

  • The feeling of a stone bruise in the under surface of the heel pad
  • Pain for the first few steps out of bed
  • Pain after sitting for a reasonable period of time
  • Pain in the heel with the absence of swelling and inflammation
  • Pain that may start in the heel and then travel up the arch or the sides of the heel
Many people believe that the pain is associated with a heel spur, as this is a common finding when x-rays of the heel are taken. However, in most cases, the presence of a heel spur does not necessarily indicate pain. The pain is most commonly associated with the partial tearing and inflammation of a soft tissue called the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia is a broad band of tissue that extends from the front edge of the heel, travels forward along the arch, and inserts at the ball of the foot.

The pain can range from mild to extreme, and can be intermittent or chronic.

Podiatrists treat heel pain very successfully with some effective interventions including: strapping, ice massage, stretching and strengthening exercises, foot orthoses, and footwear advice.

At Warnock Podriatry Services (NQ), your podiatrist will take a detailed history and provide the most effective treatment plan for you.

It will get better, and one day you will be able to get out of bed without hobbling!
