Riverfestival Brisbane

Editorial Review

Riverfestival 2007 enjoyed its ten year anniversary last year, and now in 2008, the fine folk of Brisbane come together again to pay their respects to the mighty 344 kilometre stretch of liquid wonder that is an integral part of the Brisbane life - the bloodline or the heart of the city.

Riverfestival launches in spectacular manner with Riverfire. A kaleidoscope of fluorescent colours fill the night skies of Brisbane during a stunning choreographed fireworks display, set to the pumping QBE Riverfire 2008 soundtrack from Triple M 104.5FM, and it's all captured live on Channel Seven's special broadcast from 6.30pm on Saturday 30 August!

Watch in awe as the RAAF F1-11 strike jets perform their trademark flyby right over the river. Engage in a myriad of events such as the Riversymposium, where for the first time the international event is also a preparatory meeting for the 5th World Water Forum. Under the theme of 'A Future of Extremes' leading international scientists, industry experts, community groups, government advisors and business people will explore the challenges and solutions associated with the extremes of weather and river management.

Following on from the strong focus on the environment and sustainabilty of our most valuable resource, bear witness to the Liquid Lens film festval. Presented by Riverfestival 2008 and the Department of Natural Resources and Water, this eco-conscious festival showcases outstanding original short and animation films about water, from Queensland filmmakers and digital artists.

And for the first time this year, salivate over gourmet food and delectable Australian wine (a bit later on) at the all new FREE BBQ breakfast on the Goodwill Bridge as part of the RiverSunday BBQ. There will be roving musicians, environmental art installations and a hearty cooked breakfast - a great place to spend some quality time with the family!

Emptying into Moreton Bay, the Brisbane River is dammed by the Wivenhoe Dam, forming Lake Wivenhoe, the main water supply for Brisbane. It is used for both public transport services and for industry purposes. Riverfestival is an initiative of Brisbane City Council and the Queensland Government, and helps the locals reconnect with this epic, signature natural landmark that is the Brisbane River.
