QBE Riverfire

Editorial Review

What involves three bridges, six barges and up to 9 city rooftops? It’s the third biggest fireworks extravaganza and embraces some of the more complex pyrotechnics ever seen in Australia.

A kaleidoscope of fluorescent colours fill the night skies of Brisbane during a stunning choreographed fireworks display, set to the pumping QBE Riverfire 2008 soundtrack from Triple M 104.5FM, and it’s all captured live on Channel Seven's special broadcast from 6.30pm on Saturday 30th August!

An estimated 1,500 people will be working behind the scenes to produce QBE Riverfire in order to coordinate the event with 20 laptops, 60 kilometres of cabling and thousands of electronic igniters and firing boxes to help kick the party into the next stratosphere.

The RAAF F1-11 Roulettes will fly into action from 5.00pm and 5.40pm before sweeping down low, Top Gun style, over the city to perform the ultimate crowd-pleasing ‘dump and burn’ finale to get hearts racing at a million beats per minute!

Keen event enthusiasts who arrive early enough can not only claim prime real estate to view the fly-over, but can also be the first patrons to visit the Australian Defence Force Open Day Programme at South Bank, featuring military aircraft, showcase drills and live music from 12.00pm.

The QBE Riverfire fireworks display will proceed from the Story Bridge to the Victoria Bridge. There will be no fireworks display in the Toowong reach of the Brisbane River as RegattaFest will not be staged this year due to renovations at the Regatta Hotel.

3,000 tonnes of explosives will be used for the event. It takes 40,000kg of equipment to set up QBE Riverfire. The Story Bridge alone has 25 firing points. It’ll take 25 pyrotechnic specialists approximately 6,000 man hours to set up QBE Riverfire. Can you believe it? This is definitely one of those moments for the thrill seeker out there!

While Riverfire ignites Brisbane on Saturday 30 August, Riverfestival runs from Friday 29 August to Sunday 7 September 2008. For more information and the complete Riverfestival programme visit www.riverfestival.com.au.
